The Geheugenhuis media festival was a one day festival about memories and their influence on individuals and groups. I’ve designed and built a Video Booth with Mike. This was a good example of a project that came into existence after some wild brainstorming about the festival with a few colleagues. It’s also a good example of the different time spans projects can have and how this is related to their context. A project like Popup has many different phases, related to the research and goal of the project, whereas the video booth was a simple idea that just needed to be built.
The idea of the booth was that festival visitors could record a memory they cherish and it was planned to be placed in a small tent at the festival’s location. They had a maximum of 60 seconds to record a video, so lots of visitors were able to create short clips related to the festival theme. The video clips were streamed to a screen elsewhere in the building where they were randomly played.
The final design of the booth consists of a button, an on-air light, and a Macbook for its camera, microphone and screen. If the user hits the button six LED’s light up in the on-air box and start counting down, every 10 seconds a light dims; indicating the time left to talk. The user could also stop the recording by hitting the button again. The cover of the booth was wrapped in newspapers as they also have a strong reference to memories and the design was finalized with some logo’s made on the vinyl cutter.
